Not quite 'work', seeing as my new second blog, Fat Pants, is a personal self-initiated project, documenting my food life in the DC area. I modified the free Shaken Grid theme and added a couple extra functionalities (ie: comments). Check it out for mouthwatering pics and great DC area restaurant recommendations.

New Work: CINE 2010 Gala
By Karey in Design, Print, Washington DC, byKAs promised in a previous post, above and below are some higher quality images taken from CINE's 2010 Gala at the French Embassy, showing various bits of my design work. The images give a more cohesive look at the summer design theme used in the Gala book, ticket invitations, podium sign, on screen reel.

New Work: CINE 2010 Gala Book
By Karey in Print, Washington DC, byKApologies for the grainy image, high resolution pictures to come soon, but wanted to go ahead and post some pics I snagged with my iPhone last night at the Embassy of France for CINE's annual Gala. The event itself was a wonderful evening, and I personally was so excited to see my print work for CINE finally come together for the night. The gala books above give a general idea of the design theme - a summer drive-in theater, which was carried through for the book, event signs, on screen reel, tickets (view earlier post), and web graphics.
Below are some flat JPGs of the book graphics, hopefully large enough to see some of the fun details incorporated (ie: license plate reads 'GLDN EGL' for the CINE Golden Eagle award). I really enjoyed designing for different formats and broadening my experience in print work, as well as breaking away from my fairly typically minimalist aesthetic and trying a new approach - which I'm lucky that CINE gives me these opportunities.
Busy Busy Busy
By Karey in Photography, Travel, Washington DC
I apologize for the slow down of posts the past few weeks, been quite busy lately with work and frequently out of town this spring. To make up for the temporary halt, enjoy the pic above taken with my iPhone flying out of National last fall. (Don't think I've posted this pic before . . . )

Alexa Meade
By Karey in Art, Artist, Installation, Washington DCWashington, DC based installation artist Alexa Meade has a very unique and interesting approach to her acrylic painting. Instead of painting on canvas, she paints on people! Meade applies acrylic paint directly on her subjects making them appear to be a part of the painting. This innovative approach stems from her background in political communications, in which she has a strong interest in the tensions between perception and reality. Meade's installations use paint on three dimensional surfaces of found objects, live models, and architectural spaces to create a perceptual shift in how we experience and interpret spatial relationships. When asked about her thought process by My Modern Metropolis, she says:
I paint representational portraits directly on top of the people I am representing. The models are transformed into embodiments of the artist's interpretation of their essence. When captured on film, the living, breathing people underneath the paint disappear, overshadowed by the masks of themselves.
Wow. I would love to see one of her installations! Check out more photos below.
The Aftermath
By Karey in Nikon D90, Photography, Washington DCFelt bad for these fellas working on the apartment building next door last week, and the picture cuts off the other, untouched, half of the roof. View more images from my Nikon D90, relive Snowmaggedon 2010, or explore other images from my balcony.

Earth Observatory
By Karey in Environment, Photography, Resource, Travel, Washington DCThis morning came across the photo below on my favorite DC blog, the dcist, which naturally led me to check out NASA's Earth Observatory website. Wow. Not only is their image of 'Snowmaggedon from Space' spectacular and a fascinating way to view the tracks of recent weather, but their site as a whole is full of Earth eye candy!
