Adobe After Effects 101

By Karey in After Effects, Application, Resource, Tutorial

Might be doing a bit of dabbling in Adobe After Effects for a current project, or at the very least need an understanding of best practices for constructing Photoshop and Illustrator files to be used in After Effects. Therefore, I've been watching/reading some introduction tutorials, in particular those by Adobe Instructor Chad Perkins. Found the video tutorial below on Adobe TV, and if you go to the video's original location you can view more episodes for learning After Effects CS4.

In addition, found this great Adobe help file regarding Preparing and importing Photoshop files for After Effects.

ActionScript 3, XML and MySQL

By Karey in ActionScript, Flash, Links, PHP, Resource, Tutorial, Web

Making the jump from AS2 to AS3 isn't easy. This week I begin a large Flash frontend database site, complete with a full content management system and HTML backup site for non Flash devices. Therefore, I'm spending a hefty chunk of time refining my AS3 and Object Oriented Programming understanding while losing some bad AS2 habits. This past week I've been focusing on AS3's handling of XML, a Flash essential. Below are a helpful list of links and tutorials dealing with this topic.

Simple PHP Login Tutorial

By Karey in PHP, Tutorial, Web

Yesterday, I spent the day working on a login function for CINE.org, and came across the video tutorial below on Nettuts by Jeffrey Way. Very informative and easy to follow, will be referring to it again myself in the future. Click HERE to visit the tutorial page where you can download source code, view comments, and gather more information about this specific tutorial.

You can view my finished product at the link below (though I am unable to disclose the username password!): www.cine.org/winners/winner-materials/index.php

Illustrator Curtain

By Karey in Illustrator, Tutorial

Red Curtain
Begin with a red rectangle. Use mesh tool to create folds adding a darker color. I also created a one-ended gradient in the lower right side to give a stronger lighting effect.

Red Curtain
Continue over entire the entire rectangle. Use control points to give curvature in folds. I pulled one side of the curtain to the right to give a 'view' backstage.

Red Curtain
I added a little creeper for scale! He later adapted in the final version to a more realistic person.

I needed a image of a red theater curtain for a graphic I was working on, and luckily stumbled across this Illustrator tutorial. Lately I've been working on my Illustrator and Photoshop skills in particular, and find a great deal of the online tutorials very helpful in gaining a broader knowledge of the programs. Check out the screen shots of the process of my curtain above, which I later customized more afterward to fit the design more specifically.
