Strange Signs From Abroad

By Karey in Life, Travel

Stumbled across this AMAZING article and collection of strange and funny signs from abroad. Brings back great memories of traveling in Asia when we would encounter humorous English translations on brochures, signs, and billboards. Unfortunately in Australia I never got to see the infamous 'Merge Like a Zip' road sign so many fellow travelers told me about. A few examples from The New York Times article are posted below, but definitely check out all 176 of them at Strange Signs From Abroad!

dc-busy

I apologize for the slow down of posts the past few weeks, been quite busy lately with work and frequently out of town this spring. To make up for the temporary halt, enjoy the pic above taken with my iPhone flying out of National last fall. (Don't think I've posted this pic before . . . )

Astronaut Soichi Noguchi

By Karey in Environment, Life, Photography, Travel

Spent over an hour today browsing Japanese Astronaut Soichi Noguchi's photos from aboard the International Space Station, which orbits the Earth every 90 minutes. His collection of photos, posted to his Twitter account, are breathtaking and spectacular, perhaps riving my dream of being an astronaut. Click each photo or caption below for link to higher resolution version.

NYC

By Karey in Photography, Travel

A few favorites of my trip so far in NYC to help my sister paint and move into her new apartment. I always enjoy New York and lucked out with the first hint of Spring here this weekend. More to come since my long weekend away is only half over!

fake is the new real

By Karey in Travel, Visualization

Seeing as I'm spending a few days in NYC, the following diagrams by Neil Freeman are quite appropriate as they examine both the USA as a whole and NYC on its own.

All identically named places (cities, towns, village) in the USA connected by a line:

Earth Observatory

By Karey in Environment, Photography, Resource, Travel, Washington DC

This morning came across the photo below on my favorite DC blog, the dcist, which naturally led me to check out NASA's Earth Observatory website. Wow. Not only is their image of 'Snowmaggedon from Space' spectacular and a fascinating way to view the tracks of recent weather, but their site as a whole is full of Earth eye candy!

Martian Lanscapes

By Karey in Environment, Photography, Travel

Planning a vacation? How about a trip to Mars? After looking at the images below taken with a High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera (HiRISE) from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), Mars is definitely on the top of my travel wish list!

The MRO has been in orbit since 2006 at approximately 187 miles above the surface of Mars, collecting the group of images below in resolutions as fine as inches per pixel. Wow. Posted below are a select sample taken from The Big Picture at Boston.com, and show intricate details of Martian landscapes.

Horizon 202 Panorma – Vegas

By Karey in Horizon 202, Photography, Travel

As promised in an earlier post this week, some photos with my Horizon 202 camera from a trip to Vegas last year. The Bellagio fountain was a fun shot to take because the time lapse of the shutter speed (set to around 2 sec) caused the water to be at different heights due to the timing. Additionally, you'll notice in a few of the pics the curved horizon or 'bend' of objects due to the swinging lens. I'll post pics from DC and Italy from my Horizon in the future as well. (I apologize for the not so great scanning job of the film, hence the debri, and the lack of tripod at the time.)
