Felix’s Machines

By Karey in Art, Installation, Music

Felix’s Machines are music making sculptures by artist/musician Felix Thorn. Constructed in Thorn's bedroom, these elegant sculptures facilitate music by translating rhythmic audio structures into a three-dimensional visual show. Felix says,

Although my medium focuses on the development of acoustic sounds, I am continually inspired by electronic music - the countless abstractions act as blueprints for the construction of its acoustic counterparts. I aim to build a space where artificial and dream-like environments can become a reality.

View the video below to see these intricate machines at play and read more about them at www.felixsmachines.com.

Laser Suit

By Karey in Design, Fashion, Installation

laser-suit-01

Loving this stage suit by Wei-Chieh Shih made of 200 laser diode (proper terminology?) and nylon fabric. Though I can't find a description on how it works or is operated, I believe the pictures below give a great idea of how the suit really takes on a life of its own on stage. Found on SpaceInvading. View Wei-Chieh Shih's portfolio on Behance (ps: notice his custom Behance url . . . cute).

Alexa Meade

By Karey in Art, Artist, Installation, Washington DC

alexa-meade-01

Washington, DC based installation artist Alexa Meade has a very unique and interesting approach to her acrylic painting. Instead of painting on canvas, she paints on people! Meade applies acrylic paint directly on her subjects making them appear to be a part of the painting. This innovative approach stems from her background in political communications, in which she has a strong interest in the tensions between perception and reality. Meade's installations use paint on three dimensional surfaces of found objects, live models, and architectural spaces to create a perceptual shift in how we experience and interpret spatial relationships. When asked about her thought process by My Modern Metropolis, she says:

I paint representational portraits directly on top of the people I am representing. The models are transformed into embodiments of the artist's interpretation of their essence. When captured on film, the living, breathing people underneath the paint disappear, overshadowed by the masks of themselves.

Wow. I would love to see one of her installations! Check out more photos below.

Colour Pencils by Jonna Pohjalainen

By Karey in Art, Environment, Installation

How fun!

From the Letter of Jonna Pohjalainen:

"I travelled to work in Pedvale with empty hands. I admired the lovely rural scene and the sunsets of Pedvale. I used local aspen in my work because of its lively forms and beautiful, grey colour. While you sharpen your pencils you can see time passing by. Colours bring joy and happiness in our everyday life. I chose a place of of my work because of the sunsets. You can sit and meditate near my work and look at the sunsets. Without sun there are no colours and life!"

Found at EnvironmentalArt.net. Find out more about Jonna Pohjalainen.

RIP Alexander McQueen

By Karey in Art, Fashion, Installation

Yesterday fashion lost an irreplaceable force of creativity and innovation. Below is excerpt from McQueen's Spring/Summer 1999 show, a captivating example of not only his astounding ability as a fashion designer; but also McQueen's innate talent to transform a runway into a theatrical performance.

Take a look at Alexander McQueen's 'Robot Paint Dress':

Digital Dandelion

By Karey in Art, Design, Installation, Interactive

Digital Dandelion is an interactive exhibit by YOKE and Sennep as part of Decode: Digital Design Sensations at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Through the use of a hairdryer, the viewer blows the seeds of a projected dandelion on a screen. An infrared camera tracks an infrared beam of light coming from the tip of the hairdryer, allowing the viewer to regain control of the seeds ever after they have blown off. The resulting installation is a playful and magical experience.

Find out more about YOKE, the Dandelion project, or visit the site of one of my favorite design studios - Sennep.

Sniff

By Karey in Computer Graphics, Design, Installation, Interactive, Motion

Sniff is an interactive installation by Karolina Sobecka with software development by Jim George. The project explores the idea of a moment of engagement through a computer generated dog that is programmed to interpret a viewers movements (ex: aggressive vs friendly) and respond with according behavior.
