Stumbled across this amazing poster by Plaid while browsing Design Sponge this weekend. Not sure if I appreciate so much because I'm relying on homemade cups of joe to make it through this summer, or because it brings back wonderful memories of waitressing in Tasmania a couple years back . . .

Complexification by Jared Tarbell
By Karey in Animation, Art, Computer Graphics, Flash, Illustration, Motion
While going through ages of old online bookmarks, came across an amazing Flash inspiration: computer scientist Jared Tarbell. An avid promoter of using computer code and mathematics to generate computer art, his work boils down to elaborate lines of code, written so intricately that he turns basic graphical elements into complex geometries and animations. Beginning with an algorithmic goal, he finely tunes each program with the aim of specific results, but also allows his methodology to drift off target and produce unexpected discoveries. Additionally, majority of his work is open source, encouraging all to experiment and learn from his code.
Take a look at examples below of Jared's work, and also be sure to visit his two sites:

Levitated (more animation/motion work, also a few current updates)
The Scribbler
By Karey in Design, Illustration, MotionExcerpt about The Scribbler by Ze Frank:
"The Scribbler takes simple vector based input (in the case of the online toy, your drawing) and creates its own drawing on top of it based on a number of simple rules. When a new scribble line is created it chooses a few numbers at random that eventually determine what sort of line it will draw. As it begins to draw it fine tunes those values to the type of drawing that you've made. Certain scribbles are better at following straight paths, others are better at outlining curves, and others are better for filling in large areas of color. Because there is randomness built into the program, each scribble is unique."
I'm addicted. View examples from the Scribbler Gallery below. Check out Ze's blog and more of his work at: www.zefrank.com
Karey by Kerry
By Karey in IllustrationDidn't point it out when posting about the launch of CINE.org, but take a look at my lovely caricature by Kerry G. Johnson on the staff page. My bio, written by CINE's Betsy Walters is a hoot as well . . .
"CINE's resident web diva, Karey Helms, meticulously crafts CINE.org while taking great care to post fair, accurate content. This stunning blonde hails from Tennessee and graduated with a degree in architecture from UVA, where her grade point average broke numerous school records. With her trusty boyfriend Ben, Karey has traveled to several exotic destinations, at each of which the locals tried to make her their queen.
If you'd like more information about the website or backpacking in Nepal, email Karey at kareyhelms@cine.org. Check out more of Karey's work at www.kareydarnellhelms.com."
New Work: CINE
By Karey in Flash, Illustration, Washington DC, Web, byK
Last week launched the full redesign and build of cine.org. This project was an immense amount of fun, primarily because the main goal of the new site was to create a fun aesthetic, reflective of the film and entertainment industry via light, props, and Flash. The majority of the site is HTML with PHP, Flash and XML used throughout. Majority of the 'props' - ie: marquee, film strip, video gallery, clapboard - were created from scratch in Illustrator or Photoshop, to give the site a unique look and feel, set apart from sites using stock photography or literal photographs. Since its quite a large site, and an excellent resource for an emerging and established film, video, and new media professionals; I recommend visiting the site to check out all the content, clips, and design elements.
