Found Functions

By Karey in Design, Environment, Life

Interesting collection of images by RIT student Nikki Graziano that examine mathematical functions found in nature. I personally find mathematical patterns in the natural environment fascinating from studying them in Architectural school. If you are interested in researching more, definitely check out The Self Made Tapestry: Pattern Formation in Nature by Philip Ball. View more of Graziano's images below:

Recycled M&M Wrapper Dress

By Karey in Environment, Fashion

m-and-m-dress

For Earth Day's upcoming 40th anniversary, Terracyle commissioned Chicago couture designer Christina Liedtke to design a dress for TerraCycle’s Green Up Shop's short term showcase for the company's upcycled products. Liedtke, inspired by the pop-up shop's spring theme, created a one of a kind dress from 600 recycled Peanut M&M wrappers which make up more than 1,800 individually cut and sewn flowers. The entire process took over 100 hours of labor and depicts the idea of flowers in bloom. The middle portrays a "landscape of blooming poopies" and "the bottom of the dress expresses a collage of fully bloomed mature flowers."

Check out the dress at TerraCycle's Green Up Shop by the corner of 41st St. and 8th Avenue in Manhattan from now until early May. Found on Ecouterre.

Astronaut Soichi Noguchi

By Karey in Environment, Life, Photography, Travel

Spent over an hour today browsing Japanese Astronaut Soichi Noguchi's photos from aboard the International Space Station, which orbits the Earth every 90 minutes. His collection of photos, posted to his Twitter account, are breathtaking and spectacular, perhaps riving my dream of being an astronaut. Jonathan Harris

By Karey in Artist, Design, Environment, Flash, Interactive, Resource, Visualization

I've seen a few of Brooklyn based artist and designer Jonathan Harris's projects in the past few years, but recently have been rediscovering his work. Harris is know for creating projects that combine elements of computer science, anthropology, visual art, and storytelling to primarily visualize human relationships with each other and technology. Perhaps is profile on TED says it best,

Artist and computer scientist Jonathan Harris makes online art that captures the world's expression -- and gives us a glimpse of the soul of the Internet.

Colour Pencils by Jonna Pohjalainen

How fun!

From the Letter of Jonna Pohjalainen:

"I travelled to work in Pedvale with empty hands. I admired the lovely rural scene and the sunsets of Pedvale. I used local aspen in my work because of its lively forms and beautiful, grey colour. While you sharpen your pencils you can see time passing by. Colours bring joy and happiness in our everyday life. I chose a place of of my work because of the sunsets. You can sit and meditate near my work and look at the sunsets. Without sun there are no colours and life!"

Earth From Above by Yann Arthus-Bertrand

By Karey in Environment, Photography

I was lucky enough to catch Yann Arthus-Bertrand's the Earth from Above exhibit in Bangkok, Thailand at the Zen Outdoor Arena two summers ago; so when I recently stumbled upon his website, I jumped on the chance to spread the word of his amazing work. Begun in 1994, the Earth from Above is an aerial photography project that has documented over 150 countries to date via helicopter, aimed to show us the world we live in.

Earth Observatory

By Karey in Environment, Photography, Resource, Travel, Washington DC

This morning came across the photo below on my favorite DC blog, the dcist, which naturally led me to check out NASA's Earth Observatory website. Wow. Not only is their image of 'Snowmaggedon from Space' spectacular and a fascinating way to view the tracks of recent weather, but their site as a whole is full of Earth eye candy!
