Kinetic Sketch
By Karey in ActionScript, Art, Flash, Generative, InteractiveRecently obsessed by Kinetic Sketch by Modern Carpentry and Thrid Ave Design. Kinetic Sketch is an ActionScript 3.0 physics based drawing tool with the ability to create remarkable images and patterns. In each drawing session, the user adds shapes filled with either a solid color, image, or webcam video into a two dimensional physical simulation. During the simulation, the shapes trace themselves on the canvas background based on the selected draw mode (normal, speed, or collision). Users can control other various properties during the process, including gravity and negative space, creating a powerful experience.

Felix’s Machines
By Karey in Art, Installation, MusicFelix’s Machines are music making sculptures by artist/musician Felix Thorn. Constructed in Thorn's bedroom, these elegant sculptures facilitate music by translating rhythmic audio structures into a three-dimensional visual show. Felix says,
Although my medium focuses on the development of acoustic sounds, I am continually inspired by electronic music - the countless abstractions act as blueprints for the construction of its acoustic counterparts. I aim to build a space where artificial and dream-like environments can become a reality.

Alexa Meade
By Karey in Art, Artist, Installation, Washington DCWashington, DC based installation artist Alexa Meade has a very unique and interesting approach to her acrylic painting. Instead of painting on canvas, she paints on people! Meade applies acrylic paint directly on her subjects making them appear to be a part of the painting. This innovative approach stems from her background in political communications, in which she has a strong interest in the tensions between perception and reality. Meade's installations use paint on three dimensional surfaces of found objects, live models, and architectural spaces to create a perceptual shift in how we experience and interpret spatial relationships. When asked about her thought process by My Modern Metropolis, she says:
I paint representational portraits directly on top of the people I am representing. The models are transformed into embodiments of the artist's interpretation of their essence. When captured on film, the living, breathing people underneath the paint disappear, overshadowed by the masks of themselves.
Wow. I would love to see one of her installations! Check out more photos below.

Colour Pencils by Jonna Pohjalainen
By Karey in Art, Environment, InstallationHow fun!
From the Letter of Jonna Pohjalainen:
"I travelled to work in Pedvale with empty hands. I admired the lovely rural scene and the sunsets of Pedvale. I used local aspen in my work because of its lively forms and beautiful, grey colour. While you sharpen your pencils you can see time passing by. Colours bring joy and happiness in our everyday life. I chose a place of of my work because of the sunsets. You can sit and meditate near my work and look at the sunsets. Without sun there are no colours and life!"

RIP Alexander McQueen
By Karey in Art, Fashion, InstallationYesterday fashion lost an irreplaceable force of creativity and innovation. Below is excerpt from McQueen's Spring/Summer 1999 show, a captivating example of not only his astounding ability as a fashion designer; but also McQueen's innate talent to transform a runway into a theatrical performance.
