On rare occasions, this is what my workspace looks like. (On a normal day add soda cans, dishes, mounds of papers, and random gadgets!) Thinking about purchasing an additional monitor but don't want to obstruct the view . . .

Sculptivate by Root
By Karey in Design, Logo, Print, WebPerhaps my fondest memory of Architecture School is my love affair with the laser cutter. When I came across the branding of Sculptivate by London based Root, I literally jumped for joy. To create the identity for the design and build agency for environments, Root pushed Play Doh through a stencil. The identity has been carried through across all platforms, digital and print, resulting in a very memorable and unique identity. Hopefully when the big bucks start rolling in (fingers crossed!), I can purchase my own laser cutter and re-do/re-vamp by business cards from 2007, or make my own laser cutter . . . . . luckily I have a few stacks left!
CodeOrgan
By Karey in FlashThe, umm, strangely fun website CodeOrgan translates the body content of any web page into music. This Flash app analyzes the body text of the supplied URL, first removing all characters not found in the musical scale (A to G), then reads the remaining characters to find the most commonly used 'note.' An even number translates the page into the major pentatonic scale of that note, and an uneven number renders it minor. The synthesizer is determined based on the total number of characters used on the page, and the drum loop is calculated upon the ratio of characters of the page versus number of characters that are actually musical notes. So if kareydarnellhelms.com took a shower, it would sound like this!!
AS3 – XML Gallery & Vertical Array
By Karey in ActionScript, Flash, Photography, Web, XML, byKFinally had a moment to wrap up an ActionScript 3.0 learning project started the other week, in which I built a simple photo gallery in Flash. Each colored button loads a corresponding XML, which in turn arrays thumbnails that link to the full images. My focus was to most importantly refine my AS3 and XML skills, as well as working on clearing an XML array or image to load a new in place (NOT on top). Therefore, the buttons are manually created and placed, and I used simple tweening for their movements. They aren't as smooth or consistent as I would have hoped, but I will be working on my understanding of AS3 tweening and creating function that define relationships between objects (with buttons for example). Also, in future iterations, the buttons themselves should be created and loaded based on an XML file. As you might guess, my end goal is moving towards being able to build an entire AS3 site from an XML database that can be edited via MySQL and PHP (working on the latter end with Howard over at crtl-i.com). I am able to build a full AS2 site based completely on an XML database with out the MySQL backend (example: secondstreetgallery.org), but really think its important to make the full AS3 jump.
Jonathan Harris
By Karey in Artist, Design, Environment, Flash, Interactive, Resource, VisualizationI've seen a few of Brooklyn based artist and designer Jonathan Harris's projects in the past few years, but recently have been rediscovering his work. Harris is know for creating projects that combine elements of computer science, anthropology, visual art, and storytelling to primarily visualize human relationships with each other and technology. Perhaps is profile on TED says it best,
Artist and computer scientist Jonathan Harris makes online art that captures the world's expression -- and gives us a glimpse of the soul of the Internet.
3D Eye by Conor Lawless
By Karey in Computer Graphics, MotionWhile the following video is a bit creepy and shall I say gross (?), I still strongly recommend checking out the work of biomathematician and programmer Conor Lawless. Not quite sure how or why he made the 3D Eye but found a brief description in which he says, 'I created a 3-dimensional surface from the pixel intensities in each frame, and mapped the original pixel colours onto the surface.' Hmmm . . . .
Check out Conor's website, blog, and videos.

Last Night A DJ Saved My Life
By Karey in Flash, Inspiration, Music, WebHave no idea how I came across DJ Norman Scherer's website, but it was a very welcoming and surprising pick-me-up for the beginning of a VERY busy couple of months. Turn up the volume and be prepared to be welcomed by Barry White and some colorful Flash graphics!
