I need a shot of ambition . . .

All, After much research and investigation, followed by extreme deliberation, I have officially decided to embark upon a nomadic adventure into the fluid landscape of Tasmania. Pink granite mountains, white sand beaches, grey-green casuarinas, seawater blue as sapphire – form the palette of an architectural wonder one might say presents a city within itself, giving rise to new urban form: the premiere holiday destination with luxury accommodation. Aesthetically speaking, the environmental impact analysis, provides a rick colonial history with cool-climate wines and fine local produce; and is further compounded by taking into account succulent grass-fed beef and lamb, full-flavored game meats, superb seafood, salt-sweet oysters - while also taking into consideration the evolution of performance specifications of the Tasmanian East Coast fishing ports.

Actually, to put it short . . . . I start tomorrow waitressing at Freycinet Lodge. And I am nervous as hell. Wish me luck.

Exploration of Freycinet's rich history awaits your discovery:

Everybody’s worried about time, but I just keep that shit off my mind

All, Happy belated Valentines Day from Hobart, Tasmania! This year was a very special occasion, because not only did I have an official valentine for the first time, but the city of Melbourne was very generous last week, and gave me a cell phone, a car, AND a credit card!

Last Monday (Feb 11th), I flew from Sydney to Melbourne to spend a few days with Howard from a-school and his crazy Portuguese co-worker Joao, who were visiting from Beijing for . . . work? While the first few days were typical explorations of the city for general familiarization, on the second day, one of us (I might hint guess who) had the brilliant idea to orchestrate a road trip to the famous natural attraction, the Twelve Apostles, about 4 hours southwest. Therefore, on Wednesday, while Howard and Joao were visiting RMIT, I made monumental trips to Vodafone, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and of course, Thrifty. While the act of renting a car in Australia was intimidatingly easy, I must admit I was more scared of the mirrored driving scene (steer on right, drive on left), a Toyota, and Howard's lack of a license paired with an urge to drive . . . . but a rental GPS calmed my nerves. Temporarily. I picked them up from the main train station late that evening and we began our journey from Melbourne jamming out to 'We Will Rock You' by Queen in a hot black compact car (pic 6). After about ten min we decided to pull over to a bar for a beer, beginning a trend for the trip, and to 'learn' the GPS. Instead we stumbled upon the most amazing outdoor market, with local beer stands, international food sampling, clothing boutiques, sunglass huts, and etc. Eight dresses, four beers, a pair of sunglass, lots of food, and a kite later we once again re-embarked on our trip; drove around in circles for thirty minutes due to advised 'turn back in 40 kilometers' from our electronic friend; finally asked residents for directions; and two hours later find our selves on the Great Ocean Road with zero cars and a pitch black sky. Awhile into the trip, shortly after Joao and I spotted our first koala, mooning us on the side of the road; Joao pointed out the side road bars on the entire left side of the extremely curvy road, suggesting we might be near the ocean; only to find the next morning, that we were actually driving on 200 - 500 foot cliffs overlooking the Antarctic Ocean! We arrived to our destination around midnight, and seeing as nothing was near us for miles, made camp in the car, and promptly fell asleep . . . . waking numerous times for location swap, and to turn off or on the car for much needed heat. It was painful. Yet the next morning, the site was worth it and absolutely gorgeous. Even though the drive there was about 4 hours, the drive home took us around 10 . . . . making stops for beer and beach naps, wine tasting, and of course, kite flying.

On Friday I migrated to St. Kilda, a must visit if ever in Melbourne, to spend a night by the beach before heading out to Tasmania Saturday night. It was there I realized my newfound latte addiction was making a niche in my pocketbook, when one day I had four (about $4 each), and the next day on my way to get a second I accidentally walked into the boutique next door instead, left with an authentic eel skin purse (skin addiction to match my snakeskin boots), and decided enough was enough. No more lattes. I took the Spirit of Tasmania overnight on Saturday to Devonport, followed by a bus ride to Hobart that morning. I find myself here in a pretty shitty hostel, but a quaint little town on the Southern coast of Tasmania. Nothing yet much to tell, other than internet is expensive here, Im on the job search, and I have a new German friend, Babette from Munich. Cheers, Karey

Cheers From Sydney

All . . . . . G-day mates!! (haha, doesn't sound quite right from me) For those of you who have inquired about my safety and travels to Australia, I am doing quite fine and appreciate the insistent concern. I arrived Wednesday afternoon, just barely, considering I spent my 10 hours in LAX in the wrong terminal but luckily managed in typical last minute frazzle mode to make friends (surprise!) with wandering Bradley Terminal Info man and learn that Air New Zealand was at terminal 2 just as his companion (info man 2) convinced me that he (info man 2) was my guardian angel. So far, despite the 3 days of rain I have endured in Sydney along with my hostel of hell, in which I am convinced Heidi Fleis must own stock, it has actually been a wonderful first meeting with the city-tame outback. Sydney is quite interesting, once you manage to escape past the hostel bar/club that literally strives on posters advertising drink & food specials, along with the hostel's own catchy slogan 'book-up, eat-up, hook-up,' into some much more authentic bars like my wonderful hit spot last night - Scruffy Murphey's ('nuff said). Actually though, it wasn't until today that I did truely began to appreciate the city as I explored outside the city core with my new German friend Annette (whom the girls in my hostel refer to as the 'dark-horse' due to her itsy-bitsy bikini, and constant texting to her 37 year old english teacher Ray), on a quest to find her favorite bikini boutique Wicked Weasel. Needlesstosay, on our 5 hour excursion, not only did we wander through the Oxford Street District, but did in fact come across some of the hippest/poshest/artistic districts, and most importantly tourist-void, that I have fallen in love with. (And I must not forget the beautiful parks that scatter the city) My brief excursion to the beaches was interrupted by rain storm, dispite my disapointment, I still manage to enjoy a breath taking walk amongst the beaches (famous Bondi Beach - picture 1), as well as check out the residence of Jhyimy "Two Hats" Mhiyles, a hermit who has resided on a site overlooking the beach since the 2000 Olympics. Meanwhile, as I arrived at this internet cafe 4 hours ago to send a simple email update, I befriended Mark, the 50+ man sitting beside me at the internet cafe who for a living does 'things we shouldn't speak of,' yet has been involved in Apple development and internet hosting. While I was pleased to get the perspective of a local on his country, as the conversation has turned to Naomi Klein, to Illusionist Derren Brown, to an invitation to a local musician's funeral . . . . I have decided my hostel is looking quite nice at the moment. So, therefore, I hope this update isn't too boring, and hopefully sometime in the near future I will have some interesting stories and pictures that include myself!! Please send me updates of yourselves, if you haven't done so already!!! Cheers, Karey
